Use a sharp knife to slash the thick part of each drumstick. Combine the onion, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil and Gochujang paste in a large bowl. Add the chicken, mix well, then cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to marinate.
Spray the chicken with cooking oil, then arrange on a moderate barbecue and grill for 15-20 minutes, turning several times, until cooked through and lightly blackened. Scatter with green shallots and coriander, then serve with rice.
